The First Primary Care Laboratory was opened in January 1977 in Ibn Sina Health Center; in the following few years several other health centers laboratories were launched as an effort of the government to provide easily accessible services to the population. Currently there are Laboratories in most health centers; distributed among the kingdom governorates. Laboratories have a hematology section, parasitology section and phlebotomy section. Naim Health center has the central lab; it contains the mentioned sections in addition to a special hematology section, and biochemistry section. The primary role of health centres laboratories is blood collection and other sample collection from patients through requests from the treating physicians.

  • • Receiving patient specimens and collecting blood samples to examine them in the health centers, or sending them to Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC)Lab, or to Naim Health Center Lab or Public Health Laboratory. This includes blood samples for hereditary blood disease, hormones, special chemistry and routine biochemistry, sexually transmitted disease and communicable diseases.
    • Collecting blood samples for premarital screening, Antenatal screening, non-communicable disease, House maid screening, Preschool and university students' checkup.
    • Performing routine laboratory testes such as stool and urine routine microscopy examination, pregnancy test, rheumatoid arthritis test, complete blood count, Malaria testing, blood group, hemoglobin level and blood sugar level.
    • Providing services for SMC patients by receiving, collecting and transporting their samples.
    • There is a Biochemistry Section at Naim H.C. laboratory and Abdulrahman Yousif Engineer health center, which performs routine chemistry analysis for some health centres.
    • Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) test, VDRL and TPHA is performed at Naim Health Center laboratory for all Health Centres.

  • • How can I ask for laboratory tests?
      Withdrawing blood or receiving any sample can’t be done without an electronic (I-SEHA) laboratory request from the doctor.
    • How do I know if its my turn for blood collection?
      Upon your arrival to the laboratory section please take a number from qumatic machine and be wait until your number is called.
    • Do I have to take a number for handing samples like stool or urine?
      No you do not have to, just make sure to hand it to the laboratory staff and do not leave it without informing them.
    • How can I get the results of my tests?
      To receive results take an appointment with your physician. The results should be in your electronic medical record (i-seha).
    • How much time does it take to get the test results?
      Some laboratory tests are done at the same time other may take a day or week depending on the test.
    • How many hours do I have to fast for the test?
      Please ask the doctor for proper instructions as some laboratory test require you to be fasting 10-12 hours. Please stop eating, drinking and smoking during this time.
    • Can I do a pregnancy test in the health center?
      Yes, you can by giving a urine sample (preferably early morning).
    • How can I collect urine for infants?
      You can get special infant urine collection bags from the laboratory section.
    • Will the needle hurt?
      Only a mild prick sensation will be felt.
    • What do I do if my arm is bruised or swollen after blood is drawn ?
      Do not panic! Just cool the area with cold water and it will gradually disappear within few days.
