During a press conference, Bahrain’s Minister of Health, Dr. Jalila bint Al-Sayed Jawad Hassan, announced that the Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved a historic medical milestone by successfully completing the treatment of the world’s first sickle cell anemia patient outside the United States using CRISPR gene-editing technology and bone marrow transplantation.
She emphasized that this achievement reflects Bahrain’s commitment to excellence in healthcare and medical innovation, supported by the country’s leadership. The minister praised the collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the Royal Medical Services, government hospitals, and international partners, affirming that this success positions Bahrain among the leading nations in precision medicine and gene therapy.
It was also highlighted that this breakthrough will significantly improve patients' quality of life and further strengthen Bahrain’s status as a regional and international hub for medical excellence.
