Indications: adjunct to diet and statin in type IIb or III hypertriglyceridaemia; adjunct to diet in type IV hypertriglyceridaemia; adjunct in secondary prevention in those who have had a myocardial infarction in the preceding 3 months. Cautions: haemorrhagic disorders, anticoagulant treatment (bleeding time increased) Hepatic impairment: monitor liver function Pregnancy: manufacturers advise use only if potential benefit outweighs risk—no information available. Breast-feeding: manufacturers advise avoid—no information available. Side Effects: dyspepsia, nausea; less commonly taste disturbances, abdominal pain, gastritis, dizziness; rarely hepatic disorders, headache, hyperglycaemia, acne, rash; very rarely gastro-intestinal haemorrhage, hypotension, nasal dryness, urticaria, and increased white cell count. Dose: hypertriglyceridaemia, initially 2 capsules daily with food, increased if necessary to 4 capsules daily Secondary prevention after myocardial infarction, 1 capsule daily with food. |
