This is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. Indications: elevated total and LDL cholestrol levels in primary hyper-cholesterolaemia. Cautions: liver function tests should be performed before and periodically during the treatment; correct hypothyroidism before initiation of treatment; symptoms of diffuse muscle pain of unknown origin; tenderness or weakness should be reported immediately particularly if accompanied by fever or malaise; severe renal failure. Contra-indications: active liver disease; pregnancy; and breast feeding, women of child-bearing potential. Side Effects: Reversible myositis is rare but significant side effect. altered liver function test; paresthesia; dyspepsia, insomnia, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, rash and hypersensitivity reactions and headache. also alopecia, dizziness, anaemia, peripheral neuropathy, asthenia, jaundice, pacreatitis. Risk of myopathy increases if combined with fibrates or niacin. Dose: 20-40 mg once daily at night. |
