Bahraini Genome Program
Launched in 2019 following a preparatory phase that began in 2018, the Bahrain National Genome Program is a pioneering national health and research initiative. It was announced as part of the 2019 Government Forum, with direct support from the Kingdom’s leadership, aiming to shape a comprehensive genetic map of the Bahraini population and usher in a new era of precision medicine.
The program aspires to collect and analyze 100,000 DNA samples from Bahraini citizens over ten years to establish a national genomic database. This vital resource will enable early detection and prevention of hereditary and chronic diseases, while also advancing diagnostics and personalized treatments tailored to the genetic profile of each individual. The initiative also sets the foundation for a robust local infrastructure in genomics and biomedical innovation, enhancing both healthcare and scientific research capabilities.
Built upon state-of-the-art DNA sequencing technologies— most notably Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)—the program adheres to strict ethical standards and ensures the confidentiality of participants’ data. Participation is open to all age groups, from adults to newborns, with a user-friendly online registration system through the national eGovernment Portal
( Request for Participation in Genome Screening Research Test ) This digital access has significantly improved public engagement and volunteer participation across the country
The program aims to position Bahrain as a regional leader in genomic medicine by identifying common genetic mutations within the population. These insights will support the development of population-specific early screening and prevention programs. Moreover, it lays the groundwork for integrating personalized medicine, where healthcare providers can customize treatments based on a patient’s genetic makeup—enhancing drug efficacy and reducing adverse effects.
Through its growing repository of genomic and clinical data, the program empowers researchers and clinicians to better understand rare and complex diseases within the local population. It also supports innovation in diagnostics, treatment strategies, and healthcare planning at the national level.
The Bahrain National Genome Program is more than a scientific endeavor—it is a long-term strategic vision to create a healthier, knowledge-driven society. It places Bahrain at the forefront of global efforts to harness the power of genomics for human wellbeing. With continuous support from leadership and community, the Kingdom is charting a future where data meets medicine, innovation meets care, and science meets the human spirit.
