The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Royal Medical Services (RMS) and the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA), has launched an enhanced electronic registration system for organ donation on Bahrain’s national portal, bahrain.bh.
The system allows citizens and residents to register as organ donors during their lifetime or pledge to donate after death. Users can also check their application status and cancel their registration electronically.
Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan, Minister of Health, highlighted the initiative’s role in promoting community giving and reinforcing humanitarian values. She noted that the updated registration system will streamline donor registration, provide an updated and reliable donor list, and enable faster medical response for patients in need.
The minister underscored Bahrain’s commitment to providing sustainable healthcare services under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The minister also expressed gratitude to all supporting entities, particularly RMS, for their contributions to the national organ donation and transplantation programme.
Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, CEO of iGA, emphasised that enhancing organ donation services through the national portal aligns with the government’s digital transformation strategy, particularly in healthcare services.
He also noted that the initiative supports Bahrain’s national plan (Bahrainouna), which is overseen by General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, and aims to strengthen social cohesion and encourage community participation.
The Health Ministry outlined the registration requirements, which include a valid personal ID, a minimum age of 21 years, and full legal capacity. The donor's decision cannot be made on their behalf by family members.
To register, users must log in via the eKey system, enter their details, and select the type of donation, including partial liver, kidney, bone marrow, heart, lungs, intestines, pancreatic tissue, or corneas. They can also track their application status, which may be pending, approved, rejected, cancelled, or awaiting consent approval based on their health condition.
The Ministry of Health, RMS, and iGA urged the public to register as donors via bahrain.bh, contributing to life-saving efforts and enhancing healthcare in Bahrain.
