Dr. Aysha Bu Onuq ,Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, met last week with a delegation from SAH global executive team in Salmanya medical center. The team visits the Kingdom of Bahrain to follow up with the patients that have been previously treated with Proton Therapy in the US, in the presence of Mrs.Alaa, first officer for business development in the Economic Development Council. Dr.Aysha welcomed Dr.Aalan’s visit, and praised his follow-up clinic which he offers to MOH patients. Dr.Bu Onuq stated that “further collaboration with SAH Global on training and educating the Bahraini doctors in the field of Proton Therapy in order to identify best suited cases for Proton Therapy treatment”. She pointed out that the Ministry has worked with SAH global during the past two years to achieve this goal, and it reflected positively on the patients who have received the Therapy according to this agreement, and this expanded corporation will increase our commitment to provide a good quality life for cancer patients through one of the most advanced Therapies available today. “Most of the cases that receive Proton Therapy require years of quality follow-up care, and we strive to assist your local Bahraini physicians to provide this level of service, therefore, we intend to bring the actual practice of Proton Therapy to the GCC region. To achieve this vision, we need to train local physician within, local therapists, and other local healthcare professionals to perform Proton Therapy, and we are currently providing this training in Virginia.” Said Dr.Alaan who comes to the GCC region once 1 time per year to follow up on patients. The agreement signed by both sides addressed the issue of referral and treatment of Bahraini patients with Proton Therapy. A number of Bahraini patients have been referred to SAH Global according to this agreement, which have succeeded. This expanded corporation between both parties, which is the first of its kind in training and educating Bahraini doctors, nurses and therapists in the Middle East on how to perform Proton therapy. Dr.Alaan, Specialist in the science of radiation Oncology with experience of over 25 years in Proton Therapy, comes to Bahrain once a year on February to follow-up on the patients who have been treated in SAH global. Proton Therapy is the most advanced form of cancer treatment available today. With success rate of up to 96%, this form of radiotherapy is unique in its accuracy and its heightened ability to avoid damage to healthy cells or tissues during the treatment. Whereas conventional radiotherapy might cause unacceptable damage to surroundings radiosensitive tissues, the rays of Proton therapy scatter less easily and experience minimal lateral dispersion due to the relatively enormous cells. Essentially, proton therapy is minimally invasive, provides a better quality of life for cancer patients, and provides reduced post-treatment complications that are common with more traditional options.
