GCC conference on Patient Safety Recommendation

The participants of the GCC on Patient Safety held on 6-8 April 2009 on the kingdom of Bahrain agreed on the following recommendation which was discussed between representative of GCC countries with coordination with Executive office and WHO and other international Agency such as World Alliance for Patient safety and with participation of local and international Academic organization and some Bahrain private Hospital , this include the following : First: In relation to " Safe Surgery Saves Lives" intiative: 1.1 Urge the countries which not yet endorse the Safe Surgery saves Lives to do so, in the GCC countries and Eastern Mediterranean countries 1.2 Start to put the practical steps for implementation of this initiative .in some public and private hospital in most of the GCC countries. 1.3 Collect the required information before and after implementation and publish such data on the scientific Medical Journal. 1.4 Encourage those hospitals who started implementing this initiative in both public and private sectors, and recognizing their effort through World Health Organization and GCC Executive office and highlighted by each country local media. Second : In relation to dissemination of learning culture from medical errors: 2.1 To implement Root cause analysis program, when investigating any adverse events and focusing on system repair as a means to prevent or reduce recurrence. 2.2 Reach a consensus on uniform clinical guidelines and endorse it at national level with gradual implementation, followed by periodic evaluation. 2.3 Strengthen human resources development , so the staff will gain sufficient training in safe intervention skills. 2.4 Improve the communication between members of Health care team, and document their communication during patients care. 2.5 Involving patient in their care plan and empower them to share positively in preventing clinical errors . 2.6 Introduce and implement the six patient safety solutions, and propose the required training program needed for integrating it within the Health system using the experts and local experience which was presented in this conference Third: In relation to Research for patient safety: 1.1 Setting priority for topics related to research for patient safety, which aims to provide local information d filling the gap on needed knowledge related to patient safety, Guide the researcher from Medical and Nursing students to conduct their required research towards patient safety. 1.2 Introduce patient safety in the curriculum of Medical and Nursing school. 1.3 Continue the support and provision of training program in research methodology and analytical skills for members of health care team members. 1.4 Evaluate the cost effectiveness of proposed safety measures and customize it to local need. and acceptance by our patients. The conference participants will request the GCC Executive office to adopt this recommendation and include it in the GCC Minister of Health summit meeting agenda, and to formulate a task force from the speakers who present their experience in this conference from International and GCC countries , and to proposed an action plan to implement the above recommendation, they should continue communicating with each other using the teleconferencing technology and to present their successful stories , in the future local conferences and seminar held in the region and overseas. The international and GCC speakers committed to continue following up the implementation of the above recommendation and welcome the idea of putting their experience and information to develop local focal persons in each GCC country to coordinate this activities between them. The organizing committee will be welling to coordinate and enhance communication between the speakers and country focal persons with support from the GCC Executive office.
