The Award is granted in two categories as follows:

• First Category: Innovation and Creative Award in Therapeutic, Clinical and Medical Research:
  This Award is granted to three Bahraini doctors who prepared therapeutic, clinical and medical scientific research and achieved distinguished achievements in their medical field characterized by creativity and innovation. The Award is granted to them in order to encourage therapeutic, clinical and medical scientific research and the development of their research capabilities. To be eligible for this Award, the research must have been published in an internationally recognized scientific journal and have not been submitted previously to other competitions and awards.
• Second Category: Extended Loyalty and Giving Award:
  This Award is granted to one of the Bahraini doctors who has worked for a period of no less than thirty years in recognition and appreciation of his/her efforts and contribution.
  His/ her career years must have been marked by outstanding efforts and generosity throughout his /her work journey. The nominee should also have contributed to the education of other doctors of high values and human ideals.

The Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa Award for Bahraini Doctor consists of a shield and a certificate bearing the emblem of the Award, in addition to a financial reward granted to winners from the public and private sectors.
